Family Mediation Services
The Family Mediation & Counselling Service (FMACS) works with families in dispute or conflict and with couples choosing to dissolve their relationship. Whatever the situation, we recognise it is an emotional time for everyone involved. Our service is built on our desire to support people during difficult times. Our professional mediators and counsellors are trained to help people through the process of discussion in finding resolutions.
Mediation is a very powerful method for resolving conflict to reach lasting agreements and restore positive feelings. Our success rate is well above the national average as we continue to help more and more people with family issues and separation matters.
Who Do We Help?
The simple answer is, people who are in dispute or in disagreement with others. To be more concise and illustrate the areas where mediation services works effectively, we have listed some of the types of mediation we offer.
Couples Facing Separation
If you are considering divorce and you have children and or property, investments and savings, then you will need to reach agreement before your divorce is finalised. Since 2014, the government introduced compulsory mediation for divorcing couples. It means you must try to reach agreement before you get to court.
Making Arrangements for Contact with Children
You have already separated and have a child arrangement order (See C100 Court Application) or agreement in place but want to make changes as your children grow older and the needs alter. Mediation is the best method for reaching agreement on how arrangements may be modified. It can even involve the children themselves.
Working with Children
More and more parents are recognising the importance of listening to the voice of the child. As children grow and their needs change, particularly where studies and extra curricula activities increase, the views of the child are vital. Whilst parents ‘know best’ in most cases, forward thinking parents wants their children’s view heard. Mediators, specially trained to work directly with children, help them to vocalise their wants and desires and with the agreement of the child, feedback to the parents can be so valuable in reaching agreement that suits everyone.
Most families experience inter-family conflict at some time or another. In most cases it is resolved without the need of outside expert help. Mediation is the ideal solution when inter-family conflicts exist and those involved are deadlocked.
